Lake Kussharo and the whole caldera was made by the harsh eruption of the volcano approximately thirty thousand years ago. Lake Mashuu  near the lake was also made by the eruption of volcano. 

The name of Kussharo derives from the word of the indigenous people of Hokkaido Ainu, "Kuccharo" which means the exit of a lake or a pond. The water flow from the lake makes Kushiro River. 

Kushiro River flows through Kushiro Marsh that nurture a variety of creatures and provides the migratory birds with the rest place and baits.
