This is the main sacred building of Sumiyoshi Shrine in the Port City Otaru. The buildings seemrd to be well-maintained and the color of red and white made a vivid contrast on the wall.
Some kinds of rituals seemed to be scheduled in the main building. The Shinto priest was moving in the main hall of the shrine, preparing for the scheduled rituals. When you feel bad luck of yourself or your surroundings, we Japanese recommend to have purification in the shrines and amulet to protect yourself from evils.
Can you see the Sea of Japan over the stone gate of this shrine ? Pacific herring used to swamp the west coast of Hokkaido many years ago.
Sometimes the same phenomenon can be seen there.The ocean turned to white with the sperm of herring.
These red wooden gates were built with the donation from the citizens and the name of the donors are usually written on the surface but I could not find them this time. The gates are for setting the sacred space apart from the normal world.
