by Kazu

Here I would like to welcome His Excellency Mr. Paul MADDEN the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Mrs. MADDEN.
Hokkaido Japan-British Society held a reception in Sapporo to welcome Mr. and Mrs. MADDEN.
The relationship between Hokkaido and the United Kingdom started when the Port of Hakodate was opened and the British Consulate was established in Hakodatein 1859, the next year of signing up for The Anglo-Japanese Treaty of Amity and Commerce.Approximately, 1,000 British people are living in Hokkaido now.
Nowadays, learning from the United Kingdom, Hokkaido people introduced "Foot Path" activity in the vast nature of Hokkaido and are exerting efforts to make the beautiful British Gardens and are promoting to make Hokkaido British Gardens in several regions of Hokkaido.
It can be said that Hokkaido has been developed and is still being developed even now by the people who learned the culture and technologies rooted in the United Kingdom.
