Hawaii-Hokkaido Indigenous People's Relationship!

by Kazu

The indigenous people in Hokkaido Ainu will be provided with "Ethnic Harmonization Space" called "Upopoi" which includes the National Museum of Ainu Tribe.
There are few people who have a good command of Ainu language and many dialects in Ainu language. On top of that, Ainu language doesn't have their own characters. It may be tough to preserve the language and hand down to the next generation of Ainu people.
But Unangax people, in other words, Aluet people in Alaska of the USA express their own language with alphabet and make their best efforts to hand down the language and their own culture by conducting "the Cultural Camp of Unangax people" annually.
In Hawaii where teaching Hawaiian own language had been prohibited by the federal government of the USA, immersion schools are playing the role to preserve the original Hawaiian language.
In order to exchange the information to preserve such languages of the indigenous people on this globe, Sapporo University invited a Professor from University of Hawaii and discuss the challenges with the officers of the pertinent division of Hokkaido Government.
