The shrine on the hillside of Mt. Tenguyama Sumiyoshi Shrine is facing the ocean and the people who worship pray for the safe fishing and coming back of their family including fishermen.
Long stairs leads to the main sacred house of the shrine but automobiles can reach the parking lot near the place for worship. Many stone gates and wooden gates called Torii were set on the way to the shrine.
These red wooden gates were donated by mainly the citizens of Otaru City. They are the border of our world and the sacred area. They are called "Kekkai" in Japanese. Going through the gates may change our situation and mindset.
