I went to a Lake Shumarinai for fishing "wakasagi", Japanese smelt on February 7.
Lake Shumarinai is the artificial lake in Horokanai Town. The size of the lake is
2,373 ha. This lake is known as the biggest artificial lake in Japan.
This lake is bustling with "wakasagi" fishing in winter.
A lot of people visit the lake in winter to fish "wakasagi".
The fishing starts before 6 o'clock a.m.
The surface of the lake freezes up during winter.
Therefore "wakasagi" fishing get started by making a hole with a drill in the thick ice that covers the surface of the lake.
When the hole about 15 cm in diameter is made on the ice preparations are completed.
The length of the fish is about 10 cm. Without
Responding the delicate reaction when a "wakasagi" bit into food, a good
fisherman was catching one after another. A good fisherman was catching more
than 200 of "wakasagi" by himself.
"Wakasagi" fishing is the coldness, even if I rustle, I have that. Many
people were enthusiastic about "wakasagi" fishing in nearly minus 10 ℃ of
coldness.
I went home, and took tempura, and ate fished "wakasagi".
"Wakasagi" tempura is one of my favorites. "Wakasagi" fishing in Lake
Shumarinai continues even around 3 months from January to March oerdinarily.
